Junky Car Club

junky car club

I absolutely love this.  I was asking Amy Brown for some youth ministry resources, since The Well has now found itself in that line of work, and she sent me to virb.com , where I discovered their Junky Car Club and got really excited.   If it weren't before 5am, I'd even say ecstatic.
The Junky Car Club is a car club whose members are learning to live with less so we can give more. We're a bunch of happy drivers that are politely rebelling against consumerism by driving junky cars.

We have lived for 3 years without owning a car.  For most of the past year we drove Leith and Carol Fujii's 30 year-old Fiat, one of the uglier cars ever made, and would proudly park it next to Benz's and Beamers at our kids' international school.  The Fujii's came back but offered to turn the title over to us.  However after getting stuck twice in the middle of nowhere with a dying alternator, I decided we do need something that we can trust to drive out of town for outreach visits, so are looking to buy something not older than about 10 years.  So while we may not qualify for their Elite Lemon Membership, I think we can go for the next level down.  Or is is up?

Ok, since Anna brought it up . . .

One day I stopped to fill a tire on that old Fiat that had a slow leak. A Western guy was ahead of me at the air pump, going over the tires on a brand-new red Ferrari, while a small young Thai woman chatted on her cell phone in the passenger seat. I considered, but unfortunately was too shy to actually do it, walking up to him and commenting, "I see we both drive Italian cars."

"I see we both drive Italian cars..."

I got a headset and downloaded Skype, but I can't find you. I also have Google Talk, which is better for me because it uses hardly any ram (but may not work on a mac). Anyway, find me if you can. If not, e-mail me your info.

Love you a million!

Dude, that Fiat rocked!

Did you at least have a moment of silence for it after putting it out to pasture?

I don't blame you for wanting a newer car. I replaced the alternator on my 18 year old rust bucket when I came back from Uruguay. It took $125 and about an hour to remove the old alternator and 10 minutes to install the new one. A lot cheaper than car payments. I don't expect my Toyota pickup to last 30 winters of driving on Michigan's salted roads. When it dies I'm thinking about doing without a car.

I pray for all of you on first name basis now.
